Graphic Novels Library Malta – GNLM has just been nominated for the Malta Social Media Awards in the NGOs category.
GNLM is an NGO and youth organisation with the aim to promote the educational side of comics. We aim to introduce graphic novels and comics into libraries and schools to promote literacy and make education fun by using subjects and characters that students can relate to.
Education through Comics and Pop Culture.
- To promote Literacy and Information Literacy tools through comics and graphic novels.
To promote cultural awareness in other mediums such as Comics, Films, Arts and Literature.
To have a place where educators or interested parties can meet and discuss topics of interest while connecting and engaging people with similar interests.
To create a library dedicated to the comic as a medium and also help all kinds of visual arts through mutual sharing of ideas. The creation of a body of knowledge which is somewhat lacking on the Maltese islands.
To be a resource to teachers, parents, academics, etc…. aiding people to better understand the comics culture and how they can use comics to educate or teach skills that are essential to a National Literacy framework.
To assist in presentations, discussions and organise workshops to students and educators alike on how comics, films, arts, literature can be used as an educational tool in any related subject.
To promote local artists who want to collaborate with us in creating a market for comics, films and art produced locally.
During this year GNLM has worked on various projects including visiting a number of summer schools and doing sessions using comics for children aged 3-16.
This project helped us create a list of graphic novels that the Central Public library offered to purchase for their Junior’s section. This Graphic Novels section will be formally launched during Library Day later this year on the 10th of December.
GNLM is still a young organisation, however, we have big plans for the future. We already started to make a presence at the University of Malta by hosting a debate on Comics as Education Tool across all levels during this year’s Fresher’s week. We also gave lectures to students studying for the B.ED on how to use comics in their English Language classroom.
One big project we have planned for next year is the launching of a sub-organisation/branch dealing with publishing both in print and in digital formats. The purpose is to start publishing quality graphic novels which can be used for education purposes and also hunt down a number of Maltese graphic novels produced during the 70s and 80s which have been lost in time. We want to digitally recreate these “comics from the past” together with the original creators and artists to make them available once again to the public which at this point in time has a craving for locally produced entertainment in the comics book format.
