Creating the Maltese Gothic: Adapting Clare Azzopardi’s Camilla into Film
November 3 @ 12:00 am
TIME – TBA
In adapting Clare Azzopardi’s short story ‘Camilla’ for the big screen, co-writers Teodor Reljic and Stephanie Sant (the latter also serving as director), chose to infuse the source material with a classic of Gothic and vampire fiction: Sheridan Le Fanu’s ‘lesbian vampire’ short story ‘Carmilla’, which pre-dates Dracula and is a seminal work of the genre. During the talk, Reljic and Sant will delve into the process of adaptation discussing how and why Le Fanu’s text makes for an appropriate ‘adaptation-partner’ when placed alongside Azzopardi’s short story, which is taken from the author’s award-winning short story collection, ‘Kulhadd Halla Isem Warajh’. ‘Camilla’ is the winning project of this year’s Malta Literary Short Film Contest organised by the National Book Council, and will be screened at the Malta Book Festival on November 10.
Stephanie Sant (b. 1992) graduated with an MA in Photography from Central Saint Martins – University of the Arts, London (2014-2016). She is the director of the upcoming short film ‘Camilla’, an adaptation of Clare Azzopardi’s short story of the same name, co-written with Teodor Reljic and winner of the 2018 Malta Literary Short Film contest (National Book Council). She also served as screenwriter and location scout for the short film ‘Dog Man’, currently in post-production. In April 2018, she presented ‘Procession of Disappearance’ at Spazju Kreattiv, Valletta – a short film serving as a culmination of an art residency in Gozo, created in collaboration with a group of international artists. Stephanie is also an interpreter of French performance artist Olivier de Sagazan’s ‘Hybridation’ which they perform in festivals around Europe.
Teodor Reljic (b. 1985) served as Cultural Editor and in-house film critic for the weekly national newspaper MaltaToday from 2006 until 2017. In 2014, he published his debut novel Two and is currently working on a six issue comic-book series, MIBDUL, with Norwegian-Maltese artist Inez Kristina. As of 2017, he also serves as editor of quarterly arts and culture publication Encore, and is a casual lecturer in Creative Writing at the University of Malta. He is currently in the process of writing two screenplays for local production company Shadeena Entertainment – one of them being a short film adaptation of Clare Azzopardi’s ‘Camilla’.
