Graphic Novels Library Malta in collaboration with the Central Public Library is organising a course on comics and graphic novels. This comics-appreciation course will serve as an intorduction into the world of comics. We shall be using numerous genres to study the art, story and themes in each comic. The course will also highlight how the comic book format is a vital different way of story telling.

The course is aimed at anyone who is interested in learning more or those who just want to discover the world of graphic novels. The themes which shall be discussed during the course include the following:

  • A brief history of the comic book
  • What is a comic book and a graphic novel?
  • Sequential art and how to read it
  • Superheroes (Bronze, Silver and Golden Ages)
  • Comics and gender
  • Comics propaganda – politics and journalism in comics
  • Comic as literature
  • Environmental issues and comics
  • Comics and media

We shall also explore and discuss ethical and moral questions such as why doesn’t Batman kill; should Superman rule the world to make it a better place; who was right during Marvel’s Civil War storyline; how does Deadpool know he is a comic book character; and many other topics.

Sessions will be held on Saturday morning starting from 2nd April at 10am at the Central Public Library in Floriana. Ideally, every session will take approximately 2 hours so as to be flexible and accommodate everyone who attends. So if you’re interested to attend one of the sessions or would like more information on the course, please do not hesitate to send an email to at

See you there!
