ARCHER COE, THE MIND’S ARROW in “THE THOUSAND NATURAL SHOCKS” | Review

Written by Jamie S. Rich
Illustrated by Dan Christensen
The idea of a hypnotist involved in a murder mystery might sound cheesy but I have to admit, if done well, it make for an amazing read. Archer Coe becomes the prime suspect in the case of a serial killer called the Zipper. Being a hypnotist he has to use his talents to uncover the truth and clear his name. At the same time Archer has to uncover the secrets of the Midland couple. Mr Midland has hired Archer to hypnotise his wife and uncover the reason why she is so frigid with him. During their first session something does not feel right and the plot thickens when the husband is found dead. So the police accuse Archer and the wife of planning the murder together. That is as far I am willing to say about the story without spoiling the rest but rest assured that this will be a roller coaster ride with twists and turns you won’t see coming.
The art by Dan Christensen reminds me of Darwyn Cooke’s style and in this story, it make for the perfect atmosphere. There is an element of detective noir to it and the fact that everything is in black and white with shades of grey makes the story more atmospheric.
An engaging read which drives you deeper and deeper in the story with every page. The quick pace of the story makes you feel breathless as the reader uncovers more of the mystery and discovers new information about the characters. By the end of the book, the reader is left wondering what’s next for Archer Coe? Will he manage to recover after such an emotional tour de force?
You can ask Dan Christensen at the Malta Comic Con this year at the Mediterranean Conference Centre on the 2nd and 3rd December.
