Masters of Doom by David Kushner is without a doubt the best resource to study the history of Id software, Commander Keen, Wolfenstein 3d, Doom, and Quake. And to look at the stories behind John Carmack’s and John Romero’s rise to fame. Out of my modest collection of retro video game history books this is the most informative and most well written. Based on an interview with John Romero the author had whilst staying at Romero’s house for a day and half the book is very accurate. But it goes further by constructing a narrative from the history rather than just a series of interesting facts, this makes the id software team into characters showing an insight intot their world and personalities. If you are a fan of retro video game history books this is a must buy no questions asked!
