Skim is a book that I found at the back of my local library underneath a bunch of other graphic novels. I’m not sure why but the cover, as simplistic as it looks, pulled me in. I suppose its the lack of freedom vibe I get from it… I can’t explain it but its devastatingly beautiful.

Skim is a story about a young 16 year old goth and witch, Kimberly Keiko Cameron. She goes to an all girl’s catholic school which is set in 1993 Toronto. She goes by the nick name (Skim) giving to her by cruel school kids.

Skim is a unique girl who is also an outsider. She finds joy in studying Wicca, tarot cards and she loves astrology.

The book is written in the form of a diary, seeing everything through Skims eyes. It starts off with Skim introducing her family life in such a quirky manner it’s hilarious. She also talks about the popular girl at school (Katie) and her athletic ex-boyfriend John who, very soon in the story kills himself. Katie is mentioned negatively quite allot during the book regardless of her loss.

The story takes a rather gloomy turn with topics of suicide, loss, sexuality and it raises questions about love and how love can affect a person in a good way but also a really bad way. It starts to affect Skim.

Skim doesn’t normally reach out and talk to anyone about her issues until one day her teacher Ms A catches her smoking on school property and instead of punishing her she asks for a light.

Skim without realising, wears her heart on her sleeve when she’s around Ms A, she talks to her about everything and meets with her allot. She’s forms an infatuation with the teacher and soon starts visiting her house and leaving her gifts. Ms A is all that she can think about, every time she sees Ms A her heart skips a beat, she feels sick and shakes.

When Skim finds out that her teacher is leaving to go to another place, her heart feels sore, empty and she starts losing herself. Her grades fall and she doesn’t see her best friend as much as she once did and witch craft seems stupid.

Meanwhile in the story, Skims best friend falls into the shadow of the popular crowd and they barely keep in touch at all. Without the influence of her friend, Skim notices that the popular girl Katie is falling apart too, that maybe everything everyone is saying about Katie is not necessarily what it seems. The two get chatting and without ever saying so become close friends.

This was a really nice slice of life kind of read. The dialogue and illustration go hand in hand and each page catches your attention, it’s a one sit read!

Although it was more of a teacher than a fantastical fiction novel, it was very interesting never the less. My favourite part is a quote at the back which is also mentioned in the book “I had a dream, I put my hands in my chest and held my heart, to try to keep it still” It describes the story nicely.

Skim is a Canadian graphic novel which can be found online and in Libraries.

Well until next time, take care!
